"You're going to get a little competitive on this one..." - #HAWMC Day 13

by Jenni Prokopy, the Editrix

It's day 13 of the WEGO Health (they're @wegohealth on Twitter) Health Activist Writer’s Month Challenge (HAWMC)*, in which they offer a blog prompt per day for a month, and this is a fun one: "Open a book to any page, and take the first line you see. That's the title of your blog post. What does your blog say?" Nice!

I grabbed Caffeine for the Creative Mind: 250 Exercises to Wake Up Your Brain by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield, and the first line I spotted on page 111 is "You're going to get a little competitive on this one."

This blog is all about contests, little competitions among folks with chronic illness. And it's about getting crafty, finding workarounds. I would challenge people with chronic illness to little face-offs and contests to see if they can find solutions to common issues they face.

Like: Your back hurts, your electric heating pad is broken, and all you have is stuff you already have in your house. Can you make your own heating pad in 15 minutes? Go! (The thing is, if they read THIS site, they'll know how to do it in a flash!)

Or, who can make the coolest art project using items from their chronic illness care? There would be prizes, naturally. And bragging rights. Maybe it would inspire something like this group over at Tu Diabetes...

Maybe we could have a workarounds competition, where we offer a crazy impediment and ask contestants to come up with a MacGyver-type workaround? Like, you've injured your left hand, and you have to get ready for a big job interview, and you have to blow-dry your hair. How do you get it done? Oh wait, THAT'S A NORMAL DAY FOR A LOT OF US. This is gonna be interesting. I bet we get some good answers. I'd like to see photos of how people rig up their hair dryers. Or maybe folks just say screw it and get their hair cut really short.

In the end, the blog would be all for fun. Not nasty competitive, but fun competitive. I would hope to get some great ideas and inspiration out of the whole project.

*All month you'll see me reference #HAWMC as a hashtag in my headlines; that's so when I write about it, my references show up properly in Twitter and folks can find my Tweets. That's technology, folks!
